Photography

The Photography Department at fadbk offers a programme which balances its traditional photographic legacy with a spirit of inquiry which focuses its sight on the future of the medium.

From its low-tech photomechanical beginnings to its current digital, state-of-the-art technologies photography is a medium for which a blend of art and technology is fundamental. Therefore the inventive education and practices in photography at fadbk includes all facets of contemporary art and aesthetics in the medium, as well as technical courses and practices in the field of the applied arts.

Whether it’s an image from a pinhole or pixel, classes and courses will push students to experiment, practice innovative risk, and develop a unique artistic vision and expression. This blend of conceptual, aesthetic and technological awareness makes the use of photography and its related technologies one of the most relevant artist's mediums of today.

Media, New Genres

The fadbk in general puts much effort and a strong emphasis on an interdisciplinary art practice, which is fundamental for a modern and contemporary art and has one of its origins in the shift that occurred in contemporary art from the late 1960s on and involving f. e. conceptual art, land-art, performance, installation art, and video. This shift marked an expanded vocabulary of art making and artistic strategy that was no longer based on separate mediums, but was a hybrid of many practices.
Social, political and cultural shifts and technological breakthroughs bring new tools and add to the constant evolution of the programme. And although an interdisciplinary art practice is possible in any Department of the fadbk the Department of Photography / Media, New Genres / Interdisciplinary Work remains a key venue for experimentations in cross-media and cross-cultural practices.

The Department has excellent facilities including a multi-unit colour darkroom, with three enlargers - printing any format from 35mm to 5 x 4" and colour printing facilities, a black and white darkroom with negative processing lab, eight enlargers able to produce medium sized black and white prints and a multi-unit digital lab incorporating negative scanners, and colour print facilities. A photographic studio, a film / video editing room and an audio studio are also available.
